George Sorocold has been called Britain’s first civil engineer, yet few people know his name or his considerable links with Derby. Waterworks, silk mills and river navigation are some of the projects undertaken by him here at the end of the 17th century. London, Liverpool, Yorkshire and Scotland are some of the other places where his engineering skills were employed. Using material from Derby Local Studies and Family History Library and the research of a dedicated local researcher we will take steps to rectify this.
