The Makory

The Makory, Derby Museum’s mobile Museum of Making is touring the region, engaging people with the ongoing story of making throughout Derby and Derbyshire, as the new Museum of Making at the Silk Mill undergoes development. The Makory will feature at Cromford Mills with amazing objects, fascinating stories and making activities for all ages!

Celebrating the Cromford Canal

Lots to see at the Cromford Canal Exhibition; follow the sound of the street organ! Demonstrations of traditional canal ‘Rose and Castle’ painting, peg weaving, a historical slide show, watercolour paintings for sale, and the Friends of Cromford Canal sales stand, with books, souvenirs and locally themed Christmas Cards.

Activities on the Cromford Canal

By the Wharf, miniature traction engines will be in steam, chuffing their way around and offering trailer rides. On the canal, Nottingham Model Boat Club will be demonstrating their miniature boats as well as some more unusual items. Alongside them will be a ‘pop-popping’ collection of historic stationary engines. See passenger boat Birdswood being pulled by horse, Chelsea or Ted – or you might even take a trip on board!

Craft Fair and Cafe

Ambergate Women’s Institute craft stalls and refreshments, hot and cold food, including delicious home-made soups and cakes. Why not make a day of it in Holloway? Combine a walk, a house visit, a look around the Vintage Vehicles and a great value meal at the WI cafe. You might also find a quality hand-made Christmas present at the WI craft stalls!

Mr Smedley’s House

An opportunity to see around the ground floor of one of Derbyshire’s special houses and gardens. Built by the Smedley family and now in private ownership, the house itself featured briefly in Ken Russell’s film “Women in Love”.

Masson Mill Self-Guiding Tours and Beam Engine

Self-guiding tour with weaving and spinning demonstrations on original historic textile machinery powered by line-shafting at 11am and 2pm in the Weaving Shed. The newly-completed beam engine will be in motion as part of the Discovery Days demonstrations.

Exploring the Industrialisation of the Derwent Valley at Ambergate walk

The planned route is Cromford Canal, The Hag, Ambergate Station, Halfpenny Toll Bridge and the forge tail race. The route is about 2.5 miles, lasting 1-2 hours as there is plenty to talk about. Mainly tracks and public footpaths, some steep and potentially muddy/slippery sections – please come prepared for the weather and terrain. Parking available in Hurt Arms overflow car park, but fits in with train arriving from Derby at 10.15am

In the Grounds of Lea Hurst

A walk from the Florence Nightingale Memorial Hall to Lea Hurst, once the renowned home of Florence Nightingale, across the grounds, for a look at the house and the courtyard.

Horse Drawn Canal Boat Trip

The Friends of Cromford  Canal will be offering one-way or return traditional horse-drawn trips on the historic narrowboat Birdswood between Cromford Wharf and High Peak Junction/Leawood Pumphouse. The trips take approximately 45 minutes each way.

Time: 11am and 2pm from Cromford Wharf
12.15pm and 3.15pm from Leawood Pumphouse
Cost: Single – Adults £9; Concessions £8; Children £5; Family £25.

St Mary’s Church Open Weekend

Visit St Mary’s Church, Cromford, originally built as a chapel for the Arkwright family. It was later gothicised and contains murals by renowned Victorian artist Alfred Octavius Hemming. Visitors will also be able to enjoy organ recitals by Philip Tew from 2pm to 3pm (only on Saturday). Light refreshments will be served.

High Peak Junction Open Day

Visit some of the oldest railway workshops in the world and see them come alive. You will be able to learn about the fascinating history of this building and the industry it served. Have a go at being a blacksmith on the historic forge and, with the help of our Engine House Wardens, make a poker to take home and keep.

Leawood Pumphouse in Steam

Experience the power of this great steam engine built in 1849; the heat of the boilers, the smell of grease and coal and the power of the wave as tons of water are pumped from the River Derwent to the Cromford Canal.

John Smedley’s Holloway

Join Jackie Morgan on one of these short circular walks around Lea Mills and Holloway, focusing on the life of John Smedley. Two mile walk with one moderate descent and one moderate ascent, sensible footwear required.

White Peak Distillery and Exhibition

White Peak Distillery is Derbyshire’s first full scale craft spirits distillery. Whisky is its core focus, which it started distilling and laying down in Spring 2018. The Distillery also has a range of gins and other spirits, which it sells from the Distillery shop and through local stockists. Visitors will be able to learn about the journey of the Distillery to date, the history of the Johnson & Nephew Wire Works site and see how the Distillery has integrated this heritage into its operations.

Travel and Transport Guided Tour

The growth of the cotton mills changed Cromford and the Derwent Valley forever and turned this valley into a place of industry. Come on a journey of discovery about the dramatic changes in travel over the last 200 years as this tour explores how important networks grew, linking Cromford to the rest of the world. This tour starts at Cromford Mills and finishes along the canal.
