Middleton Top lies between the villages of Cromford and Wirksworth in the Derbyshire Dales and offers a wonderful variety of fieldwork possibilities for children of all ages.  Middleton Top lies alongside the High Peak Trail, a trail which follows the course of the former Cromford and High Peak Railway, one of the oldest railways in the world!  From Middleton Top groups can easily walk to Black Rocks and High Peak Junction connecting to the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site and providing a wealth of learning opportunities for pupils of all ages.

Your group can hire bikes, visit the engine house, use the various visitor centres, take part in orienteering, have a go on a working forge, take part in audio tours, pond dipping and much more!  New online resources are available to find out more about the various sites, their links to the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site and their history as well as guidance on how to plan your visit.  Free to download resources and instructions for picture orienteering, photo trails and old photograph comparisons which teachers can print out and lead themselves, borrow pre-prepared from the visitor centre at Middleton Top or ask the Derbyshire County Council's Environmental Studies Service to lead with their group are also available.
