Heritage Protection White Paper

02/07/2007

HERITAGE Protection for the 21st Century is the title of a joint England and Wales White Paper, proposing new laws which may help protect World Heritage Sites.

The White Paper sets out ways of strengthening protection of World Heritage sites in the planning system, with the first specific provisions for statutory protection to English and Welsh World Heritage Sites.

It also sets out a vision of a unified and simpler heritage protection system, which will have more opportunities for public involvement and community engagement. The proposed system should be more open, accountable and transparent, and offer those with an interest in the historic environment a clearer record of what is protected and why; and should enable people who own or manage historic buildings and sites to have a better understanding of what features are important.
The consultation period for the paper closed on June 1.
