THE RAIL service between Derby and Matlock has been designated as a Community Rail Service, Rail Minister Derek Twigg has announced. The designated service allows for a more flexible approach to be adopted by the Train Operating Company working alongside the local community rail partnership. This enables them to manage the service with greater emphasis on meeting local needs. The designated service links the rest of the UK rail network to the Derwent Valley in Derbyshire. The service is currently run by Central Trains but will transfer to the New East Midlands Franchise starting in November 2007 where the new operator working with the Derwent Valley Rural Transport Partnership will continue to find ways to increase patronage and improve the service. Transport Minister Derek Twigg said: “Designation of the service between Derby and Matlock as a Community Rail Service means great news for passengers. It will ensure management to meet local needs at an affordable price, encouraging involvement from local stakeholders.” Mike Haigh, Business Development Director of Central Trains said: 'The overwhelming evidence from other schemes that we have been involved with shows that greater community involvement has a real impact on patronage, station facilities and services. We have been an enthusiastic supporter of these and other community initiatives and recognise the tremendous value they bring not only to the line but also to the communities they serve.' |
