SIR ARTHUR HEYWOOD AND HIS RAILWAYS – BELPER 250

Talk by Trevor Griffin, the second in a series of five from the Belper North Mill Trust. Sir Arthur Heywood built at least three miniature railways in the late nineteenth century. He built the locomotives, carriages and wagons in a workshop at Duffield which was a small scale version of Derby Locomotive Works. This is the story of this amazing man and his eccentric railways at Duffield, Doveleys and Eaton Hall which gave a lot of pleasure and attracted much interest in their time. You will hear how his children spent their nights in a narrow gauge sleeping car doing circuits of his grounds among other things. We look at what is left today including a film of the restored railway at Eaton Hall and find out why there are now more Heywood locomotives in operation than there were when he was alive!
