Empowered Adornment: Gold Jewellery Stories
with Anisha Parmar

As part of a series of co-produced events, Derby Museums are thrilled to present Empowered Adornment by Anisha Parmar.

Anisha Parmar is a globally successful jewellery designer and multi-disciplinary artist based in Derby.

Anisha’s latest project, Empowered Adornment, is inspired by her own diaspora heritage that spans three continents (Gujarat in India, East Africa and Britain), and the gold jewellery pieces that have been collected along her family’s migrant journey, Anisha’s own designs bring the concept of the heirloom into today. At the heart of her brand, one thing remains constant: she believes in the power of wearing our culture and our stories in a way that will uplift and empower.

After receiving the developing your creative practice grant from Arts Council England this year, Anisha has been researching and documenting the journey that gold jewellery pieces go on as they are passed down through the generations, from dowry, to security and now adornments of great sentimental value.

Empowered Adornment is an opportunity to learn more about Anisha’s work, hear the stories collected so far and to document your own family’s jewellery stories to be included as part of the project. We will be inviting participants to bring along their own stories and images of inherited family jewellery to be documented as a written or audio account.

This event will include an exhibition of Anisha’s work, a celebration of South Asian culture to coincide with South Asian Heritage Month (18 July – 17 August 2021), and an informal talk with Q&A session.
