First Fridays: DIY with Emma

Derby Museums welcome DIY with Emma to the Museum of Making as part of our ‘First Fridays’ after-hours season of events

Emma is a DIY educator based in Bristol in the UK and founder of the social media brand DIY With Emma. Her mission is to lower the barriers to DIY so that more people can do things for themselves around the home. Her background is in clothing production and she sewed her first dress when she was 13, inspired by her great aunt who travelled the world as a seamstress with her best Singer sewing machine in hand.

Emma joined TikTok in March 2020 to show people stuck at home how to fix things around their home and has since created over 800 free-to-access videos. Featuring easy-to-digest Hacks, How-Tos and Follow Along projects which showcase the daily progress of what goes well and more importantly what doesn’t go so well, to help normalise making mistakes as a ordinary part of the learning process.

Since March 2020 she has built a community of 280K people and had over 65M views of her educational content in countries across the world. The Singer sewing machine now lives in her office and is used regularly.
