Kitchenalia: Woodworking Course

About this event

Join Steve Smith, Pattern Maker by trade and the Museum of Making’s Workshop Supervisor, on this weekend course to make your own kitchen utensils and equipment.

After choosing two to three items to make – whether that’s a platter, seasoning station, wooden spoon, bread board, spatula, pasta rolling pin, dipping bowl or small platter – you will be guided through a variety of making processes and techniques, including carving, turning, whittling and sanding. Throughout the course you will also learn to use  a range of traditional tools and machinery, including spoke shaves, gouges, chisels, and the lathe, and will work with a selection of hard woods, including beech and oak.

You will also discover fascinating connections to Derby Museums’ collections of making, which chart the progress of Derby’s ongoing manufacturing history and the people who were involved.
