WHO WAS JEDEDIAH STRUTT? BELPER 250
Wed 4th Feb

A talk by Dr Rosemary Annable. It is 300 years since the birth of the man who funded Richard Arkwright at Cromford and built waterpowered cotton mills in Belper. Early histories depicted Jedediah as a ‘self-made man’ whose early life chimed perfectly with the values of self-reliance, self-improvement, moral fortitude and the benefits of an ‘untutored mind’ – a story that continues to this day. But what do we really know about his family background and early life? And is this story true?
