Citizens Together
Citizens Together: Tony Butler in conversation with Jon Alexander and Ece Temelkuran
In conversation with Tony Butler, Executive Director of Derby Museums, Jon Alexander and Ece Temelkuran will explore themes of hope, human nature and the power of community.
In How to Lose a Country (2019), Ece Temelkuran showed the world the rise of authoritarianism in her native Turkey, and how the same story was unfolding around the world. In the follow up Together (2021), she set herself the challenge of finding a way forward, rooted in faith in humanity and community.
For his part, in his book CITIZENS: Why the Key to Fixing Everything is All of Us (2022), Jon argues that while the headlines of our times tell a story of collapse, and this is one truth, there is another. He shows us why we can break the hold of the Consumer Story and adopt a bigger idea of ourselves: as collaborative, caring, creative citizens who can shape our communities, organisations and indeed our whole society for the better.
This will be an invigorating opportunity to hear examples of community power from around the world, as well as inviting stories and reflections from closer to home.
