Belper Cemetery Walk
A place of beauty and quiet contemplation
The Belper Cemetery, lies within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. In 1857, a Belper Burial Board was formed, and purchased 15 acres of ground on the northern side of the town, overlooking the River Derwent. A cemetery was created, with burial chapels and a lodge built and the ground landscaped in the form of an arboretum (the latter overseen by renowned landscape designer William Barron of Elvaston).
The leaflet you can download below will point out some of the features of this remarkable place, and tell you a little more of its history.
Please do take a stroll through this beautiful wooded cemetery, to appreciate the historic buildings and stunning landscape, but consider the privacy and thoughts of other visitors, and respect the graves. This is a place for peace and contemplation, not a recreation area.
