This is an introductory workshop to hot forge work, perfect for those looking to try their hand at metal fabrication and basic blacksmithing techniques. Over the course of the day, experienced metalworker Colin Joyce will teach you how to heat, cut and shape mild steel bar to create your own bespoke piece, from small, forged keyrings, to pendants to bottle openers.

You will use a variety of equipment in the Museum of Making workshop, including the forge and traditional blacksmithing tools, as well as take inspiration from makers of the past in our historic museum setting.

When does this course take place?

This is a day course running 10.30am – 3.30pm on Sunday 20th February.

Who is this course for?

This course is perfect for complete beginners, as well as those with some metal working experience. Participants must be aged 18 and over.

Spaces are limited to 6 participants. Museum of Making Members, Friends and Staff can claim a 10% discount.

Do I need to bring anything?

All materials, tools, equipment and aprons will be provided. However, we encourage you to bring any photos or drawings you would like to use as inspiration.

Please wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty and closed-toe shoes.

Lunch is available to purchase from the River Kitchen at the Museum of Making or various eateries and shops in the city centre.
